2/15/02 - Alabama lawmakers are pushing a bill to restrict truck or truck-trailer combinations to the right lanes on portions of interstate highways. SB365, authored by Sen. Charles Steele (D-Tuscaloosa), also includes a provision stating an operator of a tractor-trailer may never use the far left lane except on the direction of a law enforcement officer or to enter or exit the interstate. SB365 is pending in the Commerce Transportation and Utilities committee. The bill status number for the Alabama Senate is (334) 242-7826.

4/24/01 - HB444, pending in the House Calendars Committee, wants to double fines for speeding in construction zones if workers or equipment are present. To pass, the bill needs a floor vote by May 21. The general number for the House is (334) 242-7600.

4/12/01 - In Alabama, existing law authorizes the state Department of Transportation to set speed limits in construction zones enforced by law enforcement authorities. HB444, sponsored by Reps. Gaston, Clouse, Black (M), Guin, Rogers (M) and Barron, will amend the Code of Alabama to read that persons speeding in construction zones be fined double the amount assessed outside a construction zone. The fine will be doubled only if equipment or construction personnel are present. The amendment also calls for signs to be placed at least 100 feet in advance of such zones and at the immediate entrance, warning of double fines. HB444 is pending on the House Calendars Committee. According to Rep. Victor Gaston's office, the next action would be a vote by the full house. The general number for the House is (334) 242-7600.
