9/15/03 - A bill that would make it easier to raise money for state roads is dead for the year.
In California, it now takes a two-thirds vote to increase taxes for roads. Under ACA7, a local or regional transportation agency could impose a half-cent sales tax if it were approved by 55 percent of voters in an election.
The bill did not pass on the Assembly floor, but will likely come up when legislators reconvene in January.

6/17/03 - The Assembly will soon take a final vote on a bill that would make it easier to raise money for state roads.
In California, it now takes a two-thirds vote to increase taxes for roads. Under ACA7, a local or regional transportation agency could impose a half-cent sales tax if it were approved by a lower standard of 55 percent of voters in an election.
Three Assembly committees have voted in favor of the bill. The bill must pass the Senate and would have to be approved by voters to become law.

4/25/03 - An Assembly committee has passed a bill that would make it easier to raise money for state roads.
In California, it now takes a two-thirds vote to increase taxes for roads. Under ACA7, a local or regional transportation agency could impose a half-cent sales tax if it were approved by a lower standard of 55 percent of voters in an election.
The Assembly Committee on Transportation approved the bill by a 13-5 vote on April 21. It is now before the Assembly Committee on Elections, Redistricting and Constitutional Amendments. The bill would have to be approved by voters to become law.
