4/11/03 - A bill that would raise the state’s fuel tax each year to adjust it for inflation was defeated in the Senate Transportation Committee April 1. However, the committee has decided to reconsider the bill and vote on it again.
If SB541, sponsored by Sen. Tom Torlakson, D-Martinez, passes the committee this time, it still has several hurdles to jump. It will also have to pass the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee, and, under the California Constitution, it must pass the full chamber, as well as the House, by a two-thirds vote.
