5/28/03 - The Legislature has killed a proposal to toughen the state’s seat-belt enforcement.
HB91A would have permitted police to pull over drivers who are not buckled up. Under current law, police cannot ticket drivers for seat-belt violations unless the driver is pulled over for another traffic violation.
In addition, the bill would have raised the fee for reinstating a suspended driver’s license, and would have raised other fees, including the renewal fee for a state identification card.
The House passed the bill 108-3 on May 15. However, the measure died in the Senate May 27.
