7/28/03-Sen.
Liane Levetan, D-DeKalb, has proposed changing the state constitution permitting
revenue
from the motor fuel tax to be used for projects other than roads.
Levetan wants to change the constitution, raise the tax up to 5 cents and direct the money to alternative and mass transit, including sidewalks, buses, passenger trains and other measures.
At this point, the idea is strictly a proposal. The General Assembly has already closed its session for the year, and no bills can be acted on until legislators return for the new session in January.
