10/8/03-Gov. Rod Blagojevich has vetoed legislation that
would permit police to pullover and ticket drivers for not buckling up.
HB218, which would create a primary law for seat belt enforcement,
passed the House 79-35 and the Senate 36-20.
Under current law, police cannot ticket drivers for seat belt
violations unless the driver is pulled over for another traffic violation.
However, the measure forbids police to search a vehicle, its contents or
occupants solely for a seat belt infraction.
Lawmakers are scheduled to return to the state Capitol Nov. 4
and could attempt to override the governor ’s veto.
