8/14/03-Gov.
Jennifer Granholm has green-lighted 17 road construction
projects.
Funds for the road projects are included in the overall
$3.1 billion state Transportation Department budget for the fiscal year
that starts Oct. 1.
The projects under SB265 include freeway interchange construction in Oakland
County and road work in the Grand Rapids, Saginaw Bay and northern Lower Michigan
areas.
MDOT plans to use $200 million raised through the sale of bonds to pay for most
of the road projects. Another $50 million will come from other sources.
Also in the transportation budget, Granholm vetoed a provision that would have
required 20 percent of all federal highway bridge replacement and rehabilitation
program dollars to be used for repairs or replacing local bridges.
