5/20/03-A bill that would require drivers
to keep their hands off cell phones has been tabled until the Legislature
reconvenes in February 2004.
HF122 would prohibit hand-held cell phone use while driving.
Talking on a phone equipped with a “hands-free” device
would still be permitted.
The infraction would be a secondary offense.
The bill was in the House Transportation Policy Committee when
the regular legislative session adjourned May 19.
4/29/03-The Minnesota Legislature is reviewing legislation that would
require drivers to keep their hands off cell phones.
HF122 would prohibit hand-held cell phone use while driving.
Talking on a phone equipped with a “hands-free” device
would still be permitted.
The infraction would be a secondary offense, meaning police could
only ticket drivers if they had pulled them over for some other offense.
The bill would exempt emergency calls.
It is in the House Transportation Policy Committee. An identical
bill – SF124 – is in the Senate Finance Committee.
