5/8/03-Gov. Ronnie Musgrove has signed legislation to increase the maximum allowable length of semi-trailers from 50 feet to 53 feet.
Prior to the bill being signed into law, 53-foot trailers in the state were allowed on federal highways, but were required to get a permit for state highways.
SB2531 passed the Senate in February and was approved by the House in March. The new law has been in effect since late March.

2/11/03-Mississippi lawmakers are considering a measure to increase the maximum allowable length of semi-trailers from 50 feet to 53 feet. Currently, 53-foot trailers in the state are allowed on federal highways, but are required to get a permit for state highways. SB2531, introduced by Sen. Bob Dearing, passed the Senate and has been referred to the House Transportation Committee.
