8-2-01 -- Montana gave its stamp of approval to ethanol and biodiesel through
a fuel tax reduction on these alternative fuels. The governor signed
the bill on May 2. Additionally, the governor signed two other bills
affecting diesel fuel violations. HB131, effective Oct. 1, 2001, through
July 1, 2003, allows the Department of Transportation to stop and inspect
diesel-powered vehicles for the presence of non-taxes, dyed diesel fuel
in their supply tanks. SB58 imposes civil penalties not to exceed $100
and reduces the maximum fine from $2,000 to $1,000 for criminal violations
of the special fuel laws.
Bills not passed before the session ended in April must be reintroduced
