8-2-01 -- Montana gave its stamp of approval to ethanol and biodiesel through a fuel tax reduction on these alternative fuels. The governor signed the bill on May 2. Additionally, the governor signed two other bills affecting diesel fuel violations. HB131, effective Oct. 1, 2001, through July 1, 2003, allows the Department of Transportation to stop and inspect diesel-powered vehicles for the presence of non-taxes, dyed diesel fuel in their supply tanks. SB58 imposes civil penalties not to exceed $100 and reduces the maximum fine from $2,000 to $1,000 for criminal violations of the special fuel laws.
