has signed a bill to protect truckers’ rights to use muffled engine
compression brakes.
Under HB237, which requires a muffler on any
motor vehicle equipped with an engine compression brake, cities cannot
prohibit a truck from using
an engine compression brake if the truck is equipped with a muffler.
3/27/03-State lawmakers
have amended a bill to protect truckers' rights to use muffled
engine compression brakes.
While considering HB237, which requires a muffler on any motor
vehicle equipped with an engine compression brake, the Senate
Highways & Transportation
Committee amended the bill to make it clear that cities cannot
prohibit a truck from using an engine compression brake device
if the truck is equipped with a muffler.
The amended version passed the Senate March 24, and has been returned
to the House for approval of the amendment.

1/20/03-Montana lawmakers
are considering a proposal that would muffle engine compression brakes.
Introduced Jan. 7 by Rep. John Brueggeman (R-Lake County), HB237 would
require a muffler on any motor vehicle equipped with an engine compression
brake. Violators could be fined up to $500.
The bill has been referred to the House Transportation Committee. For
