7/10/03-A proposal authorizing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department the use of speed-radar cameras is now law.
Under the three-year pilot program, police are allowed to rig the automatic cameras on 14 of Charlotte’s deadliest roadways.
The photo radar, which is a combination camera and radar gun that documents a vehicle’s speed and tags, snaps pictures of speeders and red-light runners and sends them tickets in the mail. Violators will be fined $50 but will receive no driver’s license or insurance points.
HB562 became law June 30 without the governor ’s signature.

6/19/03-The House has given final approval on legislation that would authorize the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department the use of cameras to ticket drivers who run red lights.
House lawmakers gave final approval for the bill with a 71-37 vote June 17. HB562, which previously passed the Senate, now heads to Gov. Mike Easley for his signature.
Under the three-year pilot program, police would be allowed to rig the automatic cameras on 14 of Charlotte’s deadliest roadways.

6/9/03-The Senate approved legislation June 5 that would authorize the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department the use of cameras to ticket drivers who run red lights.
Under HB562, police would be allowed to rig the automatic cameras on 14 of Charlotte’s deadliest roadways.

The bill now heads back to the House for consideration of Senate changes. If it gains approval there, it will head to the governor.

Under HB562, a three-year pilot program introduced by Rep. Martha Alexander, D-Charlotte, and Rep. John Rhodes, R-Cornelius, police would be allowed to rig the automatic cameras on 14 of Charlotte’s deadliest roadways.
The photo radar, which is a combination camera and radar gun that documents a vehicle’s speed and tags, snaps pictures of speeders and sends them tickets in the mail. Violators would be fined $50.
The bill now heads to the Senate. A similar bill – SB552 – is in the Senate finance committee.
