5/20/03-A Senate bill that would authorize
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department the use of cameras to ticket
drivers who run red lights has been withdrawn from consideration.
Under SB552, a three-year pilot program introduced by Sen. Charlie
Dannelly D-Charlotte, police would be allowed to rig the automatic
cameras on 14 of Charlotte’s deadliest roadways.
The photo radar, which is a combination camera and radar gun
that documents a vehicle’s speed and tags, snaps pictures of
speeders and sends them tickets in the mail.

be fined $50.
The bill is in the Senate finance committee. A similar bill – HB562 – is
in the Senate judiciary committee.
