1/20/03-A legislative
oversight committee recently rejected a proposal to expand the use of
North Carolina's Highway Trust Fund, according to a report by The Associated
Press.
The proposal, which came from the state Board of Transportation, would
increase the number of projects eligible to receive money from the road
trust fund by including work other than building urban bypasses and
widening rural highways.
The AP report stated the change would triple the 1,100 miles of eligible
road projects and allow money to be used for resurfacing and maintaining
3,600 miles of highways and interstates.
The committee's rejection of the proposal cited concerns that expanding
the use of the road fund would further delay long-planned road projects.
