9/25/03-A measure that would require drivers to keep their hands off
cell phones failed to gain passage before lawmakers adjourned for the
year.
LB501, sponsored by Sen. Jim Cudaback, R-Riverdale, prohibited
hand-held cell phone use while driving. Talking on a phone equipped
with a “hands-free” device would still have been permitted.
Under the bill, a driver stopped for using a hand-held phone
could be fined up to $100. It would exempt emergency calls.
The bill was in the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee
when the session ended May 30.
