9/24/03-Gov. George Pataki has signed a bill
that could allow all vehicles to drive a little faster on roadways statewide.
S1690 amends the vehicle and traffic law authorizing the New
York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Thruway Authority
to establish, where appropriate, a 65 mph speed limit on all state roadways.
The Empire State now permits all drivers to drive 65 mph on interstates
and other limited access highways but requires them to slow to 55 mph on
other roadways.

4/3/03-The New York
State Senate unanimously approved legislation this week that would allow
all vehicles to travel at a maximum speed limit of 65 mph on New York
roadways statewide.
S1690 passed the Senate on April 1 by a 61-0 vote. The bill now heads
to the Assembly for consideration.
"This legislation amends the vehicle and traffic law authorizing
the New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State
Thruway Authority to establish, where appropriate, a 65 mile per hour
speed limit on all roadways in New York State," wrote the bill's
sponsor, Senate Deputy Majority Whip Caesar Trunzo, R-Brentwood.
If signed into law, the measure would permit "law-abiding citizens
to legally and safely travel at speeds which modern highways were designed
to accommodate," Trunzo wrote.
A similar Assembly bill - A732 - is in the Assembly Transportation
Committee. For bill status, call (518) 455-7545.
