5/21/03-Gov. Brad Henry signed legislation on May 15 requiring Oklahomans
to have their fingers scanned when they apply for a driver’s
license.
The finger scan bill, sponsored by Sen. Robert Kerr, D-Altus,
requires people getting a new or renewed driver’s license, replacement
license or identification card from the state Department of Public
Safety to submit to finger imaging.
The scan will be converted into data that will be on file with
the department and can be used to prevent someone else from using the
license or stealing a person’s identity.
SB423 also prohibits any other state or federal agency other
than the DPS from viewing the digital finger image without a court
order.
The effective date is July 1.
