8/19/03-Gov. Ted Kulongoski has signed into law a bill designed to
protect state troopers and other emergency personnel during roadside
stops.
Under HB2176, drivers would be required to maintain a safe distance
and reduce speed when approaching an emergency vehicle parked by the
road with their lights flashing.
The new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2004, requires drivers
to merge into the furthest lane away from an emergency vehicle.
On two-lane highways, drivers must slow down on approach before
passing the emergency vehicle. Violators could be fined up to $300.
