6/23/03-Legislation recently signed into law would permit cities with populations greater than 30,000, plus Newberg in Yamhill County, to install more cameras to catch drivers trying to run red lights.
Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed SB764 June 16 permitting larger cities to increase the number of photo-enforced intersections from four to eight.
Portland, which now is allowed eight photo-enforced intersections but only has cameras at six, could install cameras at up to 12 intersections under the new law.
Despite the bill's passage, many cities reportedly don't plan to add the equipment because of its high cost, about $54,000 per intersection. Eugene and Salem police say they have no plans to install the equipment.
