7/7/03-The Senate passed legislation June 23 intended to upgrade 9-1-1
emergency services for cell phone users statewide.
SB432, which passed the Senate with a 48-1 vote, would establish
an enhanced wireless E-9-1-1 emergency telephone system to allow county
9-1-1 centers to pinpoint the location and phone number of a person
who is calling for emergency assistance.
The enhancements would be administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency
Management Agency and paid for through a $1 monthly surcharge on the
state’s wireless phone users.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Joe Conti, R-Bucks, has been forwarded
to the House for consideration. For bill status, call (717) 787-2342.
