9/5/03-Gov. Phil Bredesden has signed into law legislation designed
to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops
in Tennessee.
Under HB1023, drivers are required to maintain a safe distance
and reduce speed when approaching an emergency vehicle parked by the
road with their lights flashing.
The new law requires drivers to merge into the furthest lane
away from an emergency vehicle, if practical. On two-lane highways,
drivers must slow down on approach before passing the emergency vehicle.
Until July 1, 2004, violators will receive a warning only. Afterward,
violators could be fined $50.
