6/24/03-A measure that would increase the state’s
fuel tax to help generate transportation revenue is dead for the year.
Under HB2059, sponsored by Rep. John C. Tidwell, D-New Johnsonville,
the state’s diesel tax would climb 5 cents a gallon to 22 cents. Gasoline
would climb from 20 cents a gallon to 25 cents.
The bill was in the House Delayed Bills Committee when the session
ended May 29.

C. Tidwell, D-New Johnsonville, has introduced a measure to increase
the state's fuel tax to help generate transportation revenue.
Under HB2059, the state's diesel tax would climb 5 cents a gallon
to 22 cents. Gasoline would climb from 20 cents a gallon to 25 cents.
"It is the legislative intent that the state allocate and devote
resources to the development of highways in rural areas of the state,
Tidwell wrote. "Such development shall be designed to create greater
ease of transportation and convenience for citizens of rural areas and
persons traveling in those areas."
The bill has been referred to the House Delayed Bills Committee. For
