1/13/03-A bill introduced
last week in the Virginia House would require the state Transportation
Department to develop a construction plan to help alleviate traffic
congestion around the Washington, DC, area.
HB1396, sponsored by Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter (R-Prince William),
calls for a second span parallel to the Gov. Harry W. Nice Memorial
Bridge, carrying U.S. Route 301 across the Potomac River between Maryland
and Virginia, as part of an eastern bypass around the metropolitan area.
"During peak use periods, the present bridge structure is inadequate
to accommodate even present traffic volumes efficiently and safely,"
Lingamfelter wrote. A second span would "significantly reduce
congestion along the Interstate Route 95 corridor."
The bill has been sent to the House transportation committee. The general
information number for the Virginia House is (804) 698-1500.
