5/13/03-Legislation to require performance audits
of transportation agencies is likely dead for the year.
The House passed HB1121 earlier this year by a 98-0 vote but
was still in the Senate Government Operations & Elections Committee when
the regular session ended April 27.
The Legislature opened a special session May 12 to debate the
2003-2005 budget and several other issues. HB1121 was not listed on the agenda.
3/4/03-A House bill
proposing to require performance audits of transportation agencies is
headed to the Senate.
The full House passed HB1121 on Feb. 3 by a 98 to 0 vote.
Proponents say rebuilding public trust is important if voters are ever
to support more revenue for transportation.
"It is essential that the legislature improve the accountability
and efficiency of transportation-related agencies. Taxpayers must know
that their tax dollars are being well spent to deliver critically needed
transportation projects and services," wrote Rep. Deb Wallace,
D-Vancouver, the bill's sponsor. "To accomplish this, a system
of transportation performance audits is established to provide
oversight and accountability of transportation-related agencies."
The bill is in the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee. For
