1/20/03-Wyoming lawmakers are pushing through legislation to hike the
state's fuel tax by 3 cents a gallon to pay for an aggressive multilane
state highway project.
The House Revenue Committee voted 9-0 Jan. 17 to recommend HB18, which
would boost the tax 21 percent and raise about $20 million a year for
a special highway fund.
As available money and planning would allow, 400 miles of rural, two-lane
roads reportedly would be widened to three or four lanes.
The House is scheduled to debate the bill this week.
Under the House measure, Wyoming's fuel tax would rise to 17 cents a
gallon, remaining among the lowest in the nation.
