Alabama

6/25/04-Gov. Bob Riley has signed a comprehensive tax package replacing the ad valorem tax on large trucks.
Under the bill package – HB658 and HB657 – the ad valorem tax on trucks would be replaced with an excise tax. The legislation also provides for a permanent trailer tag and the elimination of the ad valorem tax on trailers. The annual fee would decrease with the age of the truck and be apportioned for only those miles driven in Alabama.
Trailers would be subject to a $20 annual fee or trailer registrants may obtain a permanent plate for $60.
For the package to become law, it must be approved in the November general election. If approved, the legislation would take effect Oct. 1, 2005.
