1/29/04-A transportation sales tax, which was scheduled to expire next year, may not get on the ballot for renewal because it failed to include light rail.
To get on the May ballot, the tax must pass the Legislature by Feb. 3. It pays for freeways, road improvements and new buses in Maricopa County, which includes the cities of Phoenix and Tempe. The rejected language replaced the words “light rail” with “transit,” spurring opposition from light rail supporters.
The Senate Finance Committee was scheduled to meet Jan. 29 to discuss possible compromises.
