10/18/04-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill into law allowing prosecutors to charge someone who steals more than $400 worth of freight off a truck with grand theft.
The new law, formerly AB1814, applies to any cargo that has been loaded into a trailer, railcar or cargo container, whether it’s awaiting transport or is already in transit.
The measure passed the Senate by a vote of 38-0, and received final approval from the Assembly 79-0. It was signed by the governor Sept. 14.
However, a provision in the new law will cause the harsher penalties to lapse after Dec. 31, 2009, unless the General Assembly acts before then to extend them.
