California

10/18/04-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill into law making it easier to dispose of used oil filters in California.
Under existing state law, oil filters are considered a household hazardous waste. That means they can either be recycled or placed in a landfill.
Diesel fuel filters, however, are considered a hazardous waste and must be disposed of in a far more expensive manner.
The new law, previously AB2254, changes that by declaring diesel fuel filters to be a household hazardous waste.
It received final Senate approval in July by a vote of 39-0; the Assembly gave its final OK to the measure in August, voting 77-0. It was signed by the governor Aug. 23.

5/17/04-The Committee on Appropriations May 13 became the second Assembly panel to approve a bill that would make life a little easier on owner-operators who work on their own rigs.
Under current state law, oil filters are considered a household hazardous waste. That means they can either be recycled or placed in a landfill.
Diesel fuel filters, however, are considered a hazardous waste and must be disposed of in a far more expensive manner.
AB2254, sponsored by Assemblyman Greg Aghazarian, R-Stockton, would change that by declaring diesel fuel filters to be a household hazardous waste.
The bill, which previously passed the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials, now heads to the full Assembly for consideration.
