6/16/04-Gov. Bill Owens signed a bill June 4 intended to fight identity theft in the state.
The new law, previously HB1311, prohibits a public entity from issuing a license, permit, pass or certificate containing the holder’s Social Security number unless it is needed for legitimate reasons.
It includes language that requires businesses to shred all documents and papers containing personal identification information. It would be a second-degree misdemeanor to knowingly throw away such information intact.
The new law will take effect July 1.
The bill also authorizes the state’s attorney general to investigate any gas shortages resulting from the caps.
