3/31/04-The House Transportation Committee refused to consider a measure that would give Denver-area governments the chance to form regional transportation authorities for highway, bridge and transit improvements, effectively killing it for the year.
HB1392, sponsored by Rep. Bob Briggs, R-Westminster, would give local governments four possible sources for raising money for transportation:

  • Collections from new toll roads.
  • Sales taxes.
  • Lodging fees paid by hotel and motel guests.
  • A $10 fee or surcharge applied to each motor vehicle registration.

The bill also would mandate that local governments cannot be penalized by the loss of state highway funds if they voluntarily raise their own taxes.
