6/21/04-A bill that would have prohibited drivers’ use of hand-held cell phones has died.
HB5553 remained in the Joint Committee on Judiciary at the close of the session May 5.
It would have prohibited drivers from using a mobile electronic device to perform any personal computer function, sending or receiving any electronic mail, playing any video game or digital video disk, or taking or transmitting any digital photograph while operating a motor vehicle.
The bill proposed to fine violators $75. Repeat offenders would have faced a $150 fine while third and subsequent violations would have netted a fine of $250.
It exempted emergency calls.
