6/21/04-A bill that would have forbidden drivers from watching television while behind the wheel has died.
SB506, sponsored by Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville, was awaiting a vote before the full House when the session ended April 7. The bill previously passed the Senate.
Under existing state law, it is not unlawful for a television or other means of receiving a television broadcast to be located where the driver can see it while driving.
The bill would have prohibited “the use and installations of television receivers, screens, or other means of receiving a television broadcast …that are located at any point forward of the back of the driver’s seat or that are visible to the driver while operating the vehicle.”
The provision made an exception for emergency and public works department personnel, as well as large motor homes.
