4/1/04-The House voted 68-43 to kill a measure that would have allowed illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses in Illinois.
HB4003, sponsored by Rep. Edward J. Acevedo, D-Chicago, sought to permit an immigrant who is not eligible for a Social Security number to obtain a license if that person met requirements contained in the bill. The bill would not have applied to commercial driver’s licenses.
The bill would also have placed other limitations on the illegal immigrants who obtained licenses. For example, their license would look distinctly different from other driver’s licenses in the state, and illegal immigrants would not be able to use the licenses to obtain a firearm.
