LEGISLATIVE
4/23/04-The Senate Transportation Committee is considering a bill that would let legal immigrants obtain driver’s licenses.
HB5320, introduced by House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, passed the House April 1 by a 118-0 vote.
The bill would allow Illinois’ secretary of state to issue a temporary visitor’s driver’s license to a foreign national who lives in the state but who is ineligible for a Social Security number.
However, to obtain a license, that person must present evidence from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that his or her presence in the country is authorized.
The license would be good for no more than three years.
