3/2/04-Toll cheats in Illinois could have their property seized under a bill approved by the Senate. But they would have a chance to pay up before that under an amnesty period included in the plan.
Under SB2980, introduced by Sen. Terry Link, D-Lake Bluff, people who avoided paying tolls illegally would be given a two-month-long amnesty period, during which they would pay only a percentage of the tolls, fines, late fees and other debts to the toll system.
However, after the two months are up, the bill would allow the tollway to collect those debts and, if they exceed $500, to put a lien on toll cheats’ property – including cars or real estate – to ensure the money is paid.
The bill passed the Senate March 2 by a 55-0 vote. It is now before the House.
