7/13/04-An interim legislative committee plans a public hearing next month to learn more about high fuel prices and why they have fluctuated so much in recent months.
State Rep. Dave Crooks, D-Washington, chairman of the interim committee, told The Associated Press its original mission was to examine how some large retailers were “putting the squeeze” on smaller operations by charging much lower prices at the pump. That was still worth a look, Crooks said.
“But with the fluctuations in pricing this year and the fact that average constituents don’t understand why the pricing is affected the way it is, I don’t think there is anything wrong with the Legislature and the public being better informed,” he said.
The hearing will likely be held in Crooks hometown of Washington, about 50 miles northeast of Evansville, sometime in mid-August.
He said it would include input from the state attorney general’s office, the petroleum industry and convenience store operators.
