5/14/04-HB528 – a bill that would prohibit open alcohol containers in vehicles – has been combined with a similar Senate bill that was signed into law May 12.
Under existing Louisiana law, drivers are prohibited from having an open alcoholic beverage but passengers are free to drink while in the vehicle.
SB341 eliminates the open container provision, although exceptions will be made for limousines, parade trucks and floats.
The new law will take effect Aug. 15.
4/21/04-The House Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works passed a bill 14-0 April 20 that would prohibit open alcohol containers in vehicles. It has been forwarded to the House floor.
