6/22/04-A measure that sought to use $10 million of the registration and licensing fees paid annually by commercial truck owners to the Department of Transportation and Development for repairing about 6,000 miles of rural roads has died.
SB173, sponsored by Sen. Reggie Dupre, D-Montegut, remained in the Senate Finance Committee when the session ended June 21, effectively killing it for the year. The bill previously passed the Senate Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee
Under the bill, the money would have been used for roads that do not qualify for federal funding. It called for $53.5 million of the tax program to be used in the next three years.
