6/21/04-A bill that would have forbidden drivers from watching television while behind the wheel has died.
SB554, sponsored by Sen. Reggie Dupre, D- Houma, was in the House Transportation, Highways and Public Safety Committee when the session ended June 21, effectively killing it for the year. It previously passed the Senate.
Under existing state law, it is unlawful for a television or other means of receiving a television broadcast to be located in a motor vehicle forward of the back of the driver’s seat where the driver can see it while driving.
The bill would have prohibited display screens used in conjunction with audio equipment allowing the driver to view a prerecorded program on video cassette, DVD, etc. from being located in a motor vehicle where the driver can see it while driving.
It provided an exception for factory installed navigation systems, global positioning display systems and other systems used for information, mapping and monitoring of the vehicle.
