Heads up, Missouri voters! In 12 days, you will have the chance to remedy one of truckers' great pet peeves - the diversion of fuel tax and other road user taxes to non-highway uses.

According to The Associated Press, the Missouri Department of Transportation receives only 55 cents of every $1 it collects in state highway user fees and taxes. A significant share of the money goes to city and county roads, but some is transferred to other agencies.

Constitutional Amendment No. 3, which is on the state's ballot for Nov. 2, would require "all revenues from the existing motor vehicle fuel tax (less collection costs) be used only for state and local highways, roads and bridges."

The amendment would use all other vehicle taxes and fees to pay off the state's highway bonds.

Amendment 3 would also take $30 million in fuel tax now diverted to non-highway state duties and return it to highway uses.

It is important you take the time on Election Day to vote on this and other issues of concern. In Missouri, the polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are voting absentee, your ballot must be returned by mail or in person by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
