5/17/04-A resolution to get rid of the six-member highway commission responsible for roadways in the state and replace it with a governor-appointed director of transportation has died.
SJR34, sponsored by Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Lee’s Summit, remained in the Senate Transportation Committee at the close of the session May 14.
The proposed amendment to the Missouri Constitution sought to install a Cabinet-level transportation director in charge of the state Transportation Department. Currently, the agency is overseen by a commission appointed by the governor but does not answer directly to him or the General Assembly.

The issue will be considered during the legislative session that starts Jan. 7.
