Mississippi

4/27/04-Gov. Haley Barbour signed SB2777 into law April 12 increasing the penalty for drivers speeding in highway work zones.
The new law raises the penalty for speeding in highway work zones from the standard $250 to $500 for a second offense within a year and $1,000 for a third offense.
The provision is intended to serve as a deterrent and reduce the number of deaths – both to state highway workers and drivers – who are killed in work zones.
The new fine scale takes effect July 1.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is responsible for posting signs alerting drivers to the increased fine areas in construction zones.
