7/22/04-A bill that would have given drivers in the state a price break at the pump has died.
S1278, sponsored by Sen. Philip Berger, R-Eden, remained in the Senate Committee on Finance when the session ended July 18, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill sought to cap a portion of the fuel tax that rises with wholesale prices.
The variable rate is a small portion of the state’s 24-cent fuel tax. It is adjusted twice yearly.
An identical House bill – H1661 – met the same fate.
