7/15/04-Gov. James McGreevey signed a bill into law June 29 creating a local tire management program.
The new law, previously A3106, imposes a $1.50 surcharge on the sale of new motor vehicle tires sold at retail within the state. The fee will not apply to recapped tires.
The provision is expected to generate $12.3 million in new revenue in FY 2005.
Revenue generated is slated to go in a “Tire Management and Cleanup Fund” to provide grants to counties and municipalities for the cleanup of abandoned scrap tire piles. The remainder will support state Transportation Department snow removal operations.
It will take effect Aug. 1.
