5/18/04-A bill that would have created a split speed limit on interstate highways in the state and hiked speeding fines for tractor-trailers with at least five axles has died.
HB454, sponsored by Rep. Richard Cheney, R-Farmington, remained in the House Rules and Order of Business Committee at the close of the session that ended Feb. 19.
Under the proposal, the speed limit for large trucks would have dropped by 10 mph to 65 mph. All other vehicles would have been permitted to continue to travel at the current 75 mph limit.
The bill included higher speeding fines for the restricted trucks. Any truck driver found to be traveling 1-5 mph over the new limit would be fined $500. Any trucker found traveling 6 mph over the new limit would be fined $1,000. Current law limits the fine to $15.
