6/24/04-A bill that would allow emergency dispatchers to pinpoint the location of 9-1-1 calls made from cell phones is once again up for consideration.
S2973, sponsored by Sen. Joseph Robach, R-Rochester, was introduced during the 2003 legislative session but failed to move forward. The bill was reintroduced earlier this year for reconsideration.
The measure would create the wireless 9-1-1 local incentive funding enhancement (LIFE) program. It would encourage the development of enhanced wireless 9-1-1 services by providing funding to local wireless emergency dispatch centers.
It would use telephone bill surcharge money to issue bonds so municipalities can immediately gain funds for enhanced 9-1-1 service to cover service costs, equipment purchases and needed software.
The bill is in the Senate Local Government Committee.
