6/14/04-A bill that sought to ask voters to decide whether to raise the state’s fuel tax to help fund road repairs has died.
HB2559 remained in a House-Senate conference committee when the session ended May 28, effectively killing it for the year. It previously passed both chambers with different language.
Drivers in the Sooner State now pay 14 cents a gallon in tax on diesel fuel and 17 cents a gallon on gasoline. Under the bill, sponsored by Rep. Bill Nations, D-Norman, the diesel fuel tax would have increased by 9 cents and the gas tax by 7 cents.
Revenue generated would have gone to a variety of transportation needs, including public transit and passenger rail. The bulk of the new money, however, would have been placed in the State Highway Construction and Maintenance Fund.

4/27/04-The Senate passed a bill April 22 that would ask voters to decide whether to raise the state’s fuel tax to help fund road repairs. The House passed the bill in February.
