6/14/04-A bill that would have permitted local voters to impose a countywide, one-cent sales tax on diesel fuel and gasoline has died.
SB892 remained in a House-Senate conference committee when the session ended May 28, effectively killing it for the year. It previously passed both chambers with different language.
The bill would have allowed for a special election on a proposed motor fuel tax to be called by the board of county commissioners or through an initiative petition signed by at least 5 percent of registered voters in the county. If approved by voters, the tax revenue could only be spent on county roads and bridges.

4/27/04-House lawmakers narrowly approved a bill April 20 that would permit local voters to impose a countywide, one-cent sales tax on diesel fuel and gasoline.
SB892, which previously passed the Senate, would allow for a special election on a proposed motor fuel tax to be called by the board of county commissioners or through an initiative petition signed by at least 5 percent of registered voters in the county. If approved by voters, the tax revenue could only be spent on county roads and bridges.
It now heads to a House-Senate conference committee for revisions.
