4/29/04-The Senate voted 23-21 April 28 to set aside a bill – S356 – that would permit police to pull over drivers who are not buckled up, effectively killing it for the year.
Currently, police can ticket drivers older than age 17 only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation. However, such violations are a primary offense for anyone 17 and younger who is not belted.
3/9/04-Drivers caught not wearing their seat belts could be pulled over under legislation in the Senate.
A bill sponsored by Sen. Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, would permit police to pull over drivers who are not buckled up. Currently, police can ticket drivers older than age 17 only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation.
However, such violations are a primary offense for anyone 17 and younger who is not belted.
Under S356, the fine would be $25 and would go up to $40 if anyone under age 18 is unrestrained.
